How Do Hydraulic Side Shift Flail Mowers Differ from Rotary Mowers?

1. Product Design

The Hydraulic Side Shift Flail Mowers feature a sickle rotor design equipped with hammer blades that automatically retract when encountering strong resistance. The rotating blades cut stems, weeds, and shrubs, and crush the material. In contrast, Rotary Mowers employ a horizontal cutting deck design. Their cutting components consist of rigid metal blades—typically two or three in number—which offer high structural rigidity but lack operational flexibility.

2. Working Principle

Hydraulic Side Shift Flail Mowers rely on high-speed centrifugal force for cutting. Their cutting deck can be shifted laterally (left or right) by up to 300–500 mm. Additionally, they are equipped with a fully enclosed, heavy-duty housing that provides a high level of protection.

Rotary Mowers lack a side-shift function; the cutting deck is fixed directly behind the tractor, resulting in a fixed cutting width. They typically utilize semi-open or simple guards, which are unable to completely block flying debris.

3. Application Areas

Hydraulic Side Shift Flail Mowers work well in orchards, vineyards, road embankments, ditches, levees and landscaping sites. Rotary Mowers are more suitable for open and flat areas, such as large pastures, soccer fields, golf courses and plain farmland.

4. Safety

Hydraulic Side Shift Flail Mowers provide high safety performance. When hitting hard objects like stones or tree roots, the flails swing back automatically to reduce impact and protect the machine. The fully enclosed structure stops debris from being thrown out, avoiding injury to people or damage to nearby facilities.
